In the 1871 census, Elizabeth Middletonr, a widow aged 53 and born in Hackford, was living at Court Green, working as a housekeeper for Charles Brighten, a 74 year old widower farmer.

In the 1881 census, John Middleton aged 35 was listed as being married to Sarah Middleton née Pointer, aged 36, living with their daughter Mary Maria, aged 6, on the Plumstead Road in Hempstead.

In the 1891 census, John Middleton aged 45 was listed as being married to Sarah Middleton aged 46, living on the Plumstead Road in Hempstead.

In the 1901 census, Sarah Middleton was listed as a 56 year old widow living with her 5 year old granddaughter Constance.
Mary Maria Ward
née Middleton was the daughter of Sarah Middleton and was probably born at 3 White Horse Cottages.

Sarah Middleton, widowed head of the family and mother of Mary Maria Ward née Middleton.
Mary Maria, mother of Sidney Middleton who was born out of wedlock
c.1903.
Samuel Ward, married to Mary Maria c.1904 and was probably the father of Sidney.
Violet, Maud and Samuel, children of Samuel and Mary Maria.
Ten year age difference between Samuel and Mary Maria - marriage may have been 'recommended' after the birth of Sidney.


Census 1921

Above census record - 1921:
Sarah Middleton, widowed head of the family aged 76, mother of Mary Maria, working as a land worker for Daniel William Hagen at Green Farm.
Samuel Ward, aged 36, married to Mary Maria and working as a farm labourer for L. Smith at Stody.
Mary Maria, aged 46, mother of Maud and Samuel and working as a charwoman for Rachel Hagen at Green Farm.
Maud and Samuel, children of Samuel and Mary Maria, described as 'both alive' and attending full time school.


1939 Register

Above 1939 Register:
Samuel Ward, aged 85, working as a general labourer.
Mary Maria Ward, aged 74, working at home.
